Behavior of a Magnet Falling Through a Copper Tube 1. Falling in Air: When a magnet falls through the air, it accelerates continuously due to gravity. The speed keeps increasing over time because there is minimal resistance opposing the motion. 2. Falling Through a Copper Tube: Induction of Eddy Currents: As the magnet enters the copper tube, it creates a changing magnetic field that induces eddy currents in the tube’s walls. These currents generate their own magnetic field, which opposes the motion of the magnet (according to Lenz’s Law). Opposing Force: The opposing force from the eddy currents increases with the speed of the magnet. This means the faster the magnet moves, the stronger the opposing force becomes. Speed Changes Inside the Tube: Acceleration Phase: Initially, the magnet accelerates as it falls due to gravity. Deceleration Phase: As the magnet speeds up, the opposing force from eddy currents grows stronger, reducing the rate of acceleration. The magnet doesn’t continue to speed up indefinitely because the opposing force balances out the gravitational pull. Constant Speed (Terminal Velocity): Eventually, the opposing force becomes equal to the gravitational force, and the magnet reaches a constant speed called terminal velocity. This is the maximum speed it will attain while inside the tube. 3. Relative Speed Perception: In the Tube vs. Free Air: In free air, the magnet would continue to accelerate, reaching a higher speed over time. However, inside the tube, the speed becomes constant, which may seem like a decrease compared to the continuous acceleration in free fall. Conclusion: The magnet’s speed inside the copper tube becomes constant due to the opposing force of eddy currents, while in free air, it would keep increasing. This is why the speed inside the tube appears to "decrease" compared to free fall, though it actually just stabilizes.

If you put metal plates at the poles of the ceramic magnet to close the magnetic circuit it will be able to support a lot more weight. I managed to lift 60 lbs with one of those 2X1X1/2 inch ceramic magnets.

I did this at a play place a grocery store had. there were magnet toys on the floor in front of a tv playing The Croods, and I was bored playing with them, so I was looking for places to stick them to. I tried the edge of the tv screen, and I saw cool rainbow effects on the screen, and then I put it right to the screen. After a couple minute, an employee noticed, and pulled me away and told me to play with something else. I don't know if they told my mom when she picked me up

Problems with MHDs: Water (fresh or salt) has a weak magnetic dipole, and isn't easily influenced by magnets, on a small scale it looks efficient, moving something big escalates the efficiency problem. The MHD generate highly turbulent (and subsequently noisy) exhaust flows as a result Silent is not a word anyone would use and the moment you waste money to put those on a sub, pretty much everyone in the world will know exactly where you are.

What I'm wondering is could a magnet stop a solid copped bullet. When a magnet is thrown at a copper plate it creates and em field that slows the magnet and the strength of the field increases the harder it's thrown. It makes the copper plate hot from absorbing the inertial energy. I doubt the magnet would stop a bullet shot right at it but maybe if it's shot down a rail lined with magnets it might. I thought of the idea when I saw a video about using a swing arm to launch a small projectile into space.

Nice video. One bit of irony: regardless the corrosion/rust, those magnets are still attractive. Irony is an interesting construct in our English language, but often is not recognized. One easy way to know if it's irony: put a magnet against it. If it sticks, it's irony.
